Are you looking for a truly unique gift or commemoration? Maybe for a loved one’s birthday, anniversary, Mothers’/Fathers’ Day, Christmas or even Valentine’s Day? Perhaps a keepsake of your old address - or a celebration of your new one? Or just because you deserve it?!
I am Nigel Chute BA(Hons), MCSD, Cotswolds-based artist and buildings specialist, and I can provide you with you a beautifully crafted portrait of your home carefully tailored to your exact requirements.
As we emerge from the pandemic something is clear – we all want to be close and connected to our nearest and dearest. It is wonderful hearing stories of how people feel about their homes, and this spurs me on to try and capture just what it is that they love about them. I work for clients all over the UK and overseas including many proud grandparents!
Essentially my approach is old-school craftsmanship which I learned at the drawing board in my other profession as a designer, particularly perspective and freehand sketching. Parallel motion, adjustable set squares and railway curves were where I cut my teeth back in the day!
Alongside my career as an artist I’ve been a product designer for almost 40 years. Nowadays our design business couldn’t function without CAD and modern technology but the ethos is the same as for my artwork – taking my clients by the hand and making their dreams come true!
And finally – when I’m not drawing houses or taking new products to market I offer a little guidance to some of our future stars of the arts, technology and commerce. In my role as mentor I try to give youngsters a taste of the outside world beyond formal education and see if I can move them forward a click on life’s ratchet!
At the beginning of the pandemic I joined four other local business owners to urgently brainstorm a way of supporting young people in our region. The result was The Cotswold Challenge.
This competition, which first launched during lockdown in 2020 to help Year 11, 12 and 13 students that were missing out on taking exams, invited students from the Cotswolds to send in their artwork, photographs, poems, stories, inventions or business ideas to be judged by expert and experienced judges including Lady Bathurst, Adam Henson and Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. The scheme was so successful in 2020 that we ran it again in 2021 – this time including the Swindon area as well - and the wonderful results of our talented young people are proudly displayed on our website.
How do I create your artwork?
My drawings are really paintings in monochrome, which feature chalk and charcoal on tinted Canson art paper having a texture which allows the base colour to show through. The exact choice of paper tone is influenced by all sorts of factors including building materials, the aspect e.g. north or south facing or simply the atmosphere of the subject.
I work from photographs - yours will be fine - and always like to have as many different views as possible to help me really capture the essence of the property. Don’t worry about emailing me too many – the more the merrier!
The technical bit…
First of all I construct an architectural perspective line drawing of whichever particular view you like best. Tip: It’s always good to see a door – looks welcoming! The next step is working this up on the special art paper to produce your finished portrait.
The creative bit…
I use charcoal sticks and Conté chalks to block in the main tones and then complete the fine detailing with chalk and charcoal pencils. A special technique I’ve invented is using fine slivers of eraser like a paintbrush to cut back through the charcoal to the paper colour beneath.
I have a BA(Hons) degree in art and design, and have also been elected to full membership of the Chartered Society of Designers.
Original artwork is generally A4. Remember mounting and framing can significantly add to the overall size.
Over more than 20 years I have found my technique works especially well with double-mounting, where the outer, bigger mount board is a pale tone and the inner mount board is darker providing added focus and sense of drama. I find clients have a broad taste in framing which I am happy to arrange.
Pleased to offer free within the GL7 postcode; otherwise standard carrier rates.
My list price for commissions is £650. Discounts on more than one drawing are negotiable.
These days many of my clients like to showcase their commissions online or in the form of prints and cards.
To assist with this my specialist printer takes a fine art quality scan from every artwork so you have both hi-res and lo-res digital copies to use in any way you choose. We can also arrange top quality Giclée art prints for you to share.
A special thank you to my supplier of choice, The Coln Gallery. An independent business since 1975 with shops in both Cirencester and Fairford well loved, and respected, by both amateur and professional artists alike. #shoplocal
